Preparing a classic car for long-term storage: the operator's checklist

Most classic car storage damage is done in the first week, by things nobody did on the way in. A facility-side preparation checklist covering fuel, fluids, tyres, battery, pests and the record you should be creating while you work.

Owner-facing guides to storing a classic car are plentiful and mostly aimed at someone putting a car in their own garage for winter. This one is written from the other side of the transaction: you are a facility, the car is not yours, and the preparation you do or skip on day one becomes your problem for the next two years.

The framing that matters is that almost all storage damage is slow. Nothing dramatic happens in week one. Flat spots, corrosion, perished rubber, seized components and rodent damage all accumulate quietly, and by the time they are visible the cause is months behind you.

Before anything else: agree the storage mode

Preparation depends entirely on a question that is often left unasked — is this vehicle being laid up, or kept ready?

  • Laid up. The owner does not expect to drive it for a season or longer. Preparation optimises for preservation, and getting it back on the road is a deliberate process.
  • Kept ready. The owner may call on a Friday wanting it Saturday. Preparation optimises for readiness, which means accepting some wear in exchange for availability.

These pull in opposite directions on fuel, battery, tyres and fluids. Guessing produces the worst outcome of both: a car that is neither properly preserved nor actually ready. Record the answer against the vehicle at intake, because staff eighteen months from now will not remember the conversation.

Fuel

Modern pump fuel degrades, and ethanol-blended fuel attracts moisture and is unkind to older fuel systems — rubber lines, cork, brass and early plastics were not designed for it.

For extended lay-up, the usual approach is a nearly full tank with a stabiliser added, then run the engine long enough that treated fuel reaches the carburettor or injection system rather than sitting in the tank. A near-full tank limits the air volume in which condensation forms; treating the fuel without circulating it protects the tank and nothing else.

For vehicles kept ready and started periodically, stabiliser matters less than turnover. Note the fuel state at intake either way — it is a question that gets asked at collection surprisingly often.

Fluids

  • Engine oil. If the car is going into extended storage on old oil, it is sitting on combustion acids and moisture for the whole period. A change before lay-up is cheap relative to what it protects.
  • Coolant. Check condition and freeze protection, particularly on cars that have been sitting before they arrive.
  • Brake fluid. Hygroscopic, and one of the fluids most likely to be overdue on a car that has not been used much. Note the age if you can establish it.
  • Fuel system, on cars with carburettors. Whether to drain float bowls depends on the car and how long it is staying; make it a considered decision rather than an oversight.

Tyres

Flat spotting is the classic long-term storage complaint and is largely preventable. Inflate above normal running pressure for lay-up — many operators use a set margin above placard — and record both the placard pressure and the pressure you set, so it is unambiguous at collection.

Moving the car periodically, even a short roll to change the contact patch, addresses both flat spotting and brake surface corrosion. Where a vehicle genuinely cannot be moved, stands take the load off the tyres, but that is a decision to make and record with the owner rather than to apply by default.

Also note tyre age at intake. On a classic, tyres that look excellent may be well past the point where they should be trusted at speed, and that is a conversation to have on the way in rather than on the way out.

Battery and electrics

Battery management is the single highest-volume recurring task in a classic storage facility, and it is where the choice between lay-up and kept-ready bites hardest. A maintenance charger suits a car being kept ready; disconnection may suit a genuine long lay-up, at the cost of losing radio codes, adaptive settings and — on later vehicles — occasionally more than that.

Whatever you choose, the failure mode is the same: a charger that was connected on day one and unplugged during a bay reshuffle eight months later, with nobody noticing until the owner arrives. This is precisely why battery checks belong on a recurring care schedule that records completion rather than in a staff member's head.

Pests, moisture and covers

Rodents are the most underrated risk in vehicle storage and among the most expensive. They nest in air boxes and exhausts, and they chew wiring, particularly on vehicles that sit undisturbed. Inspect and bait around bays rather than inside vehicles, and check undisturbed cars specifically — the quietest bay is the attractive one.

  • Leave the interior clean and dry. Anything organic left in a cabin is an invitation.
  • Use breathable covers. Non-breathable covers trap moisture against paint, which is worse than no cover at all.
  • Position vents and intakes deliberately, and note anything blocked so it is unblocked before the car is returned.
  • Consider whether the handbrake should be off with the car chocked, to avoid seized shoes over a long lay-up.

Create the record while you do the work

Everything above is work performed on a vehicle you do not own. Each item is also a fact that somebody will eventually want to know: what pressure were the tyres set to, was the battery disconnected, was the fuel treated, when was the car last moved.

Capturing that as you go costs almost nothing. Reconstructing it later is impossible, and the attempt is what produces the vague, unconvincing answers that turn a straightforward question into a dispute. The check-in process is the natural place for it, and the reasons run deeper than tidiness — see duty of care and evidence.

The intake checklist, condensed

  1. 01Confirm storage mode: laid up or kept ready. Record it.
  2. 02Full condition capture and photography before the vehicle reaches its bay.
  3. 03Fuel level and whether stabiliser was added and circulated.
  4. 04Fluid condition, and any work authorised by the owner in writing.
  5. 05Tyre pressures — placard and as-set — plus tyre age.
  6. 06Battery approach: charger, disconnection, or periodic start. Record which.
  7. 07Interior cleared, breathable cover fitted, pest inspection completed.
  8. 08Keys, documents and any spare parts logged against the vehicle.
  9. 09Owner insurance position confirmed and noted.
  10. 10Care schedule created, so the first recurring task is already booked.

The last line is the one facilities skip most often, and it is the one that determines whether any of the preceding nine still hold true a year from now.
