Managing battery, tyres and routine care in long-term vehicle storage

Long-term storage is a maintenance problem, not a parking problem. How to structure recurring care schedules for stored vehicles so nothing depends on somebody remembering.

A car left undisturbed for two years does not emerge in the condition it went in. Batteries discharge, tyres develop flat spots, fluids settle and degrade, seals dry out, and fuel ages. None of this is dramatic on any given week, which is exactly why it gets missed — there is never a day when the problem is urgent until the day it is expensive.

The operational consequence is that long-term vehicle storage is a maintenance business wearing a parking business's clothes. Facilities that treat it as maintenance build recurring schedules. Facilities that treat it as parking rely on someone noticing.

The four things that actually degrade

Battery

The most common and most visible failure. Modern vehicles draw parasitic current even when switched off, and a battery left connected in a cold facility can be flat within weeks. Trickle chargers solve this, but only if they are connected, working, and actually checked — a charger that has come unplugged looks identical to one that is working.

The practical rule: a trickle charger is not a solution, it is a device that also needs checking. Schedule the check, not just the connection.

Tyres

Pressure drops steadily, and a vehicle resting on under-inflated tyres develops flat spots. On a classic with older-compound tyres this can become permanent. On a modern performance car it can mean an unpleasant first drive and an awkward conversation at collection.

Monthly pressure checks are a reasonable baseline. Some operators over-inflate slightly for long-term storage and record the fact so the vehicle is returned to normal pressure before handover — which is fine, provided the record exists and someone acts on it at collection.

Fluids and engine

Periodic engine starts are contested — some operators run vehicles up to temperature monthly, others prefer to leave them undisturbed and service on collection. Both positions are defensible, and the correct answer depends on the vehicle and often on the owner's instructions.

What matters operationally is that the decision is recorded per vehicle rather than applied by whoever is on shift. A car whose owner has asked for monthly starts and a car whose owner has explicitly asked for none should not depend on staff memory to be treated differently.

Exterior and interior

Dust accumulates, covers trap moisture if the vehicle was stored damp, and interiors can develop odour in humid conditions. Cleaning rounds are lower stakes than the mechanical items but far more visible to the owner — the state of a car on collection day drives their perception of the entire storage term.

Building a schedule that survives a busy week

A care schedule fails in one of two ways: it generates so much work that staff begin ignoring it, or it generates so little that things slip. Three principles keep it useful.

Make tasks generate themselves

A recurring task defined once per vehicle should produce work automatically at the right interval. A wall calendar requires someone to look at it; a system that produces today's list requires only that someone opens it.

Make completion cheap to record

If marking a task complete takes longer than the task, records will drift from reality. Staff will do the work and record it later, or in batches, or not at all. The completion record should be one action, on the floor, with the person and timestamp captured automatically.

Make overdue visible

The value of a schedule is not the list of what is due — it is the list of what is late. Overdue items need to be visible without anyone going looking, because by definition nobody is currently thinking about them.

A workable baseline

As a starting point for long-term stored vehicles, adjusted per vehicle and per owner agreement:

  • Battery and charger check — fortnightly
  • Tyre pressure — monthly
  • Engine start and run to temperature — monthly, where the owner has agreed to it
  • Fluid level check — quarterly
  • Exterior clean — quarterly, or before any owner visit
  • Full condition review — every six months, photographed

The six-monthly photographed condition review is the item most often skipped and the one that pays for itself. It creates a dated record of the vehicle's state throughout the storage term, which turns a potential dispute at collection into a comparison of two documented points in time.

Why this ends up as a software problem

None of this is complicated for one car.
